Demonstration of Intarsia
Intarsia is the art of creating pictures using the natural color, grain, texture and thickness of various native and exotic woods. The art form started in Italy in the 1400’s and was revived in North America in the mid 1970’s by Judy Gale Roberts. Individual pieces of wood are selected for their color, grain and texture to represent parts of a picture, they are then shaped, sanded and glued to a backing board to complete the picture. A small space is normally left between pieces to increase the illusion of depth by bringing shadow lines into the picture.
The December 6th, 1 - 3pm, Intarsia demonstrator, is Del Holbrook who has been creating Intarsia pieces for over 20 years. He will demonstrate the steps from pattern through wood selection to finishing a piece. Del’s work is available in the Blackberry Gift Shop and hangs around the world with pieces in Sweden, England, Australia, Germany, United States and of course Canada.
